Special Inspections – Structural
Concrete Construction – Concrete Placement, Forming, Reinforcing Steel and Bolts installed in Concrete
Prior to placement of concrete, the special inspector will review and document the general arrangement and construction of formwork
for conformance to shapes, lines and dimensions of members as required by the approved plans and specifications. The special
inspector will also review and document placement, size, grade, clearances, and laps of reinforcement steel and the placement of
anchor bolts for substantial compliance to the approved project plans and IBC requirements per section 1704.4 and table 1704.4 .
During structural concrete placement operations, the special inspector will monitor the concrete placed for the footings, cast in place
walls and slab on grade. The Special Inspector’s duties will include verification of the delivered concrete for: (1) proper mix design for
intended use; (2) temperature; (3) mixing time; and (4) slump and monitoring the addition of any water to the mix on site. The special
inspector will also verify that the reinforcing steel is not displaced during placement operations and that the concrete is properly
consolidated around the reinforcing steel and the anchor bolts.
Structural Masonry Construction - Mortaring, Grouting, Reinforcing Steel
During the construction of the masonry walls the special inspector will observe and document the masonry work. Our services will
include the inspection of the placement of block, embeds and reinforcing steel for substantial compliance to the approved project
plans and IBC requirements per section 1704.5 and table 1704.5.1. During grout placement operations the special inspector will
monitor the grout placement for (1) proper mix design for intended use, (2) temperature, (3) mixing time, and (4) slump (ASTM C143).
The Inspector will also verify that the grout is properly consolidated.
Structural Steel Construction - Steel Erection, Field Welding, High Strength Bolt Inspection, Metal decking and Column Base Plate
Grouting
The Special Inspector will observe and document the erection of structural steel members and verify proper placement of the
components. He will also observe field-welded connections for compliance to the contract documents per the IBC section 1704.3.1
table 1704.3, and American Welding Society (AWS D1.1) Codes. Full penetration welds will require continuous inspections and be
ultra sonically tested by (others). Fillet welds and puddle welds will be visually inspected. Welding Certifications of the field welders
and the Welder Procedure Specifications (WPS) must be submitted and reviewed. All ASTM A325 bolted connections will be inspected
for “snug tight” condition. Any Slip Critical or full tension, bolted connections (ASTM A 490) will be verified for torque/tension with the
Skidmore Wilhelm bolt tension calibrator. The structural steel and steel joist framing will be inspected for location, shape, size, and
grade to approved plans and specifications. Erection tolerances (plumb & level) will be verified.
All high-strength, non-shrink grout that is required to be placed between top of footing and bottom of column base plates, will be
observed and recorded for assurance. Assuming that the contractor intends to use a Building Department approved structural steel
fabricator/supplier. The contractor/fabricator will be required to supply a certificate of compliance for the structural steel, shop welds,
and modifications.
